“Montado”: Cork Detachment Workshop

Montado ecosystem is the Alentejo natural heritage by excellence: at Herdade do Freixo do Meio, homestead with more than 440 ha, we’ll discover how this complex but sustainable ecosystem is organised, from the cork oak, to the holm oak, to the black pork, to the cork, in this case, through a workshop of cork detachment. Every year, always between May and beginning of July, those men go out to the field, in the first and fresh hours of the morning to work in the “skin” of the oak tree, after 9 years of growing. We’ll go along with them, making their path, learning their work and experiencing the huge difficulty of cork detachment. It is also time to learn the secrets of the handcrafted work in cork… We’ll finish the journey with a tasting session of the regional products of the homestead, produced in a biological way: sausages, cheese, pies, acorn pate, olives, bread, fruit, cake and wine.
